Spay Days Longview -- And Update February 12, 2009

As part of national Spay Day USA, the Humane Society of Northeast Texas and Animal Protection League in Longview will host SPAY DAYS LONGVIEW on Tuesday, February 24th and Thursday, February 26th. East Texans are urged to have their dogs and cats spayed or neutered to improve their pets' health and behavior, and reduce pet overpopulation in our communities.

The Humane Society of Northeast Texas will provide special discounts on these two days to further reduce the cost of spay/neuter surgery. Low-income families earning $20,000 a year or less are eligible to have their pets sterilized at no cost (proof of income is required). Space is limited and all pets must be pre-registered for surgery no later than Friday, February 20th.

"We encourage everyone to spay and neuter their pets," explained Roxanne Hutson, excecutive director of the Humane Society of Northeast Texas. "During SPAY DAYS LONGVIEW, though, our goal is to spay or neuter 125 pets that might not otherwise ever get sterilized without our help."

The benefits of spay/neuter are numerous. Altered animals tend to live longer, healthier lives and have fewer behavioral problems. They don't contribute to the pet overpopulation problem so fewer animals end up on the streets, in animal shelters, or euthanized. The Humane Society of Northeast Texas received over 10,200 animals in 2008.

To register your pet for SPAY DAYS LONGVIEW, please contact the shelter at 903-297-2170 no later than February 20th.

UPDATE: Spay Days Longview was a big success. Thanks to the efforts of Animal Protection League and the Humane Society of Northeast Texas, 85 dogs and cats were sterilized. Not only will these pets now live longer, healther lives, but the births of potentially hundreds of unwanted puppies and kittens over the next few years has been eliminated! Most pet parents qualified for the free spay/neuter program and the rest received discount coupons to help cover the spay/neuter surgery costs.

Photos of Spay Days Longview will be printed in the shelter's next newsletter, coming out at the end of March. To receive a copy or for more information about spay/neuter, please contact Roxanne Hutson at 903-297-2170.
