Longview Animal Control officers received a tip about dozens of dogs living in deplorable conditions from a woman who went to a residence to purchase a puppy. A judge granted a warrant for the officers to search the premises who found more than 40 small-breed dogs (schnauzers, poodles, pomeranians, pekingese, and malteses) living in tiny cages filled several inches thick with feces and urine. The animals were seized on Thursday, April 30th and immediately taken to the Humane Society of Northeast Texas. The judge awarded custody of the dogs to the shelter on May 1st.
"Most of the dogs have missing hair and skin conditions due to living in filthy cages and being physically and nutrionally neglected for so long," stated shelter Executive Director Roxanne Hutson. "The smell was overwhelming and the living conditions these dogs endured was horrible. We immediately contacted our volunteer network to bathe and brush the dogs and had a certified vet tech examine them and make recommendations for treatment."
Most of the dogs should make wonderful pets for anyone wanting to adopt them who can provide the extra TLC and patience they need. Because the dogs have lived their entire lives in cages and were used only for breeding, many are shy and timid when being handled by people. None of the dogs are housetrained.
"Even though the dogs have had limited experience with people or being properly cared for, they all seem to thoroughly enjoy their baths and getting attention from the staff and volunteers," said Hutson. "It's so rewarding to see these dogs tranform from matted, feces-covered, scared pooches to fluffy, happy, affectionate lap dogs.
About a dozen of the dogs have already been sent to area rescue/placement groups or been adopted by the public; more homes are needed. Ages and colors vary, and most dogs weigh less than 10 lbs. If you are interested in adopting one of these precious pets, please contact the Humane Society of Northeast Texas immediately at 903-297-2170.
